In honor of Puk on his 14th birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Why the 7-year rule for dog years is nonsense \u2013 and how a simple 2-point rule delivers realistic results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The old rule of thumb says: one dog year equals seven human years.<\/p>\n<p>According to this calculation, Puk would be \u2013 on his 14th birthday \u2013 98 years old today.<\/p>\n<p>But that is obviously nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>Realistically, Puk is about 70 human years old.<\/p>\n<p>How does this enormous difference come about?<\/p>\n<p>And why is the 7-year rule so far off?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the 7-year rule doesn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dogs do not age linearly.<\/p>\n<p>But the 7-year rule acts as if every dog year meant the same aging progress.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, dogs age:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>extremely fast in the first year (more comparable to 15 human years),<\/li>\n<li>a bit slower in the second year,<\/li>\n<li>and from the third year on, moderately \u2013 about four human years per dog year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This makes it clear: the blanket seven years fit neither at the beginning nor in later age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The simple 2-point rule \u2013 realistic and easy to remember<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Modern veterinary medical data can be reduced to two memory aids:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st dog year = 15 human years<\/li>\n<li>2nd dog year = +9 human years<br \/>From then on: +4 years per dog year<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That\u2019s all you need to get a much more accurate estimate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How old is Puk really?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Puk turns 14 years old today.<\/p>\n<p>With the new rule, we get:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>first dog year \u2192 15 human years<\/li>\n<li>second dog year \u2192 24 human years<\/li>\n<li>from the third year: 11 further dog years \u00d7 4 = 44 human years<\/li>\n<li>Total: 15 + 9 + 44 = 68 human years<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you typically round the age a bit generously, you get about 70 years \u2013<\/p>\n<p>a healthily aged senior, but not a centenarian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 7-year rule is a likeable myth, but clearly disproven scientifically.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, a simple 2-point rule delivers surprisingly precise results \u2013 and explains why Puk is about 70 today and not nearly 100.<\/p>\n<p>All the best, dear Puk \u2013 to many more healthy years. \ud83d\udc3e\u2764\ufe0f<\/p><\/p>\n<div class=\"gsp_post_data\" data-post_type=\"post\" data-cat=\"uncategorized\" data-modified=\"120\" data-title=\"70!
