Why the new income limit for parental allowance in reality mainly affects women \u2013 and what that reveals about our understanding of equality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 The regulation sounds fair \u2013 but it isn&#8217;t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From April 1, 2025, parental allowance will only be paid if the parents&#8217; joint taxable annual income is below 175,000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like a reasonable tool to exclude high incomes from state benefits.<\/p>\n<p>But the crucial point lies in the detail:<\/p>\n<p>The limit applies to couples jointly, not to the person actually receiving the parental allowance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83c\udf7c Who is really affected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In practice, this means:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the partner (often the man) earns very well,<\/li>\n<li>and the other person (often the woman) takes parental leave or earns little,<\/li>\n<li>then the entitlement is completely lost \u2013 regardless of whether she has her own income or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So parental allowance is made dependent on the other person&#8217;s income.<\/p>\n<p>And this hits exactly those who already more often take on care work in society: women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2696\ufe0f Between aspiration and reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Officially, the goal of family policy is:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromote equality and strengthen economic independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, however, the opposite happens:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women who pause their own employment for the sake of the family,<\/li>\n<li>become financially dependent on their partner,<\/li>\n<li>and lose state support, even though they personally get nothing from the high income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This does not break up the old division of roles \u2013 it cements it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udd0d Why this is so problematic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The law treats families as if they were an economic unit without power asymmetries.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not true:<\/p>\n<p>In many partnerships, there are unequal financial circumstances,<\/p>\n<p>and women more often bear the burden of unpaid work, from housework to childcare.<\/p>\n<p>When state support also falls away,<\/p>\n<p>economic dependence becomes the logical consequence \u2013<\/p>\n<p>a step backward for equality and self-determination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udcac An outcry that is justified<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is so misogynistic! Because it affects women 99% of the time.
