Glute head lifts, leg raises \u2013 movements that are not beautiful, not heroic, but unsatisfying in their intimacy, because they show the body as a machine.<\/p>\n
And then, finally: hyperextensions.<\/p>\n
Zieser placed the barbell at hip height so that Hans could let his upper body sink forward over it, in order to straighten it again using the tension of the backs of his legs and glutes. Hans Castorp thought that this straightening and lowering was a metaphor that one does not even have to look for.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlways last,\u201d said Zieser. \u201cThe back is the contract. A strong back knows no pain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp had to give a brief laugh, even though he was tired. It was a dry laugh.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is your slogan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zieser looked at him, and in his gaze there was for a moment something like memory \u2013 not sentimental, more businesslike.<\/p>\n
\u201cWas,\u201d he said. \u201cToday it is a sentence that one can repeat when people think they have to have a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd what is the reason?\u201d asked Hans Castorp.<\/p>\n
Zieser answered without hesitation:<\/p>\n
\u201cAtrophy. It comes. It is silent. It does not only take your strength, it takes your posture. And posture is\u2026\u201d He paused, as if he did not want to look too deeply into Hans Castorp\u2019s soul. \u201c\u2026more than muscle.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp did the hyperextensions. Fifteen. The last three were hard. Not hard like a burden, but hard like the awareness that you are doing something that you will have to do again in the future.<\/p>\n
He wrote the core block in the logbook.<\/p>\n
Zieser nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood,\u201d he said. \u201cSet by set. One day. Three days. One week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp stood there, sweaty, with a feeling of tiredness that was not sick, but honest. And he felt, strangely, a kind of calm \u2013 not the calm of relaxation, but the calm of duty fulfilled.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
Zieser looked at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow shower,\u201d he said. \u201cThen eat. Then sleep. And this evening measure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp raised his eyebrows.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeasure?\u201d<\/p>\n
Zieser pointed to the logbook.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeasure what matters,\u201d he said again. And then, almost kindly: \u201cThe body learns when you look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp thought: And when you look, you might see things you do not want to see. But he said nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cTomorrow,\u201d Zieser continued, \u201clegs: squats and hip thrusts. The day after tomorrow pull: pull-ups and rowing. Then rest day. Then push again. 3 days training, 1 day rest. Keep it simple.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if tomorrow I\u2026\u201d he began.<\/p>\n
Zieser raised his hand, and his voice was not hard, just clear:<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you really want something, you will find a way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hans Castorp was silent. He did not know whether he really wanted something. But he knew that it was no longer so easy to get out of things once they were written down.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was\u2026\u201d he began, and he searched for a word that did not sound ridiculous.<\/p>\n
Zieser helped him.<\/p>\n
\u201cHard,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd simple.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he smiled \u2013 this time actually \u2013 and said, as if it were both a farewell and a threat:<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no miracles. There is only training.\u201d<\/p>\n
